President Bush Sends Peru Trade Agreement to Capitol Hill

Washington (Sept. 27)—Indicating that the United States-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement was in our “national interest,” President George W. Bush sent legislation to Congress to implement the agreement. In his message to Congress he wrote, “The Agreement provides the opportunity to strengthen our economic and political ties with the Andean region, and underpins U.S. support for democracy and freedom while contributing to further hemispheric integration.” (More)

Conner Highlights Importance of Free Trade for U.S. Agriculture Industry

Washington (Sept. 27)—Acting Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Conner addressed the Agricultural Coalition for U.S.-Peru Trade at the National Press Club. He said, “Creating and maintaining these foreign markets for our products is necessary. It is necessary for the future health of American agriculture. We have tremendous opportunity to open markets for our agricultural goods with these pending free trade agreements, with Panama, Peru, Colombia and Korea.” (Remarks)

Commerce Secretary Gutierrez Hails Strong Growth in 2nd Quarter, Calls for Continued Export Expansion

Washington (Sept. 27)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez released the following statement on the final estimate of real gross domestic product (GDP), which showed that the American economy grew at 3.8 percent in the second quarter of 2007: “Our second quarter GDP growth shows the remarkable flexibility and resiliency of our economy in the face of some substantial challenges. Today’s report confirms that the economy was able to switch gears and derive a significant boost from rising net exports.” (More)

Negroponte: 2007 Defined As a Year of Great Engagement with Latin America

Washington (Sept. 18)—At the Association of American Chambers of Commerce in Latin America’s 40th annual meeting, John D. Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State highlighted the importance of engagement with Latin America saying, “Open markets and expanded opportunity are transformational forces. They create powerful incentives for countries to strengthen the institutions of representative democracy, boost accountability and the rule of law, and facilitate the workings of modern, efficient economies.” (More)

Deputy Assistant Secretary Estrada Addresses Importance of Free Trade Agreements on Capitol Hill

Washington (Sept. 24)—International Trade Administration Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing Jamie Estrada participated in the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) Forum on Capitol Hill to address the importance of pending free trade agreements (FTA’s) with Peru, Colombia, Panama and Korea. FTA’s have proved to be one of the best ways to open up foreign markets to U.S. exporters. Today, the United States has FTAs with 14 countries. In 2006, six new FTA’s were implemented with Bahrain, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Morocco, and Nicaragua. (More)
